It seems he was honest with you, so be honest with him. Yes being nervous can cause problems.... have experienced it MANY times myself, and I'm no young "rooster" anymore. (forgive him for that, and give him another chance)
Tell him that you don't feel any "sparks" (yet anyway) and, if you are really interested in a "friends only" tell him that. Things may change for the better as you get to know each other.
Go out for dinner, lunch, or even coffee and donut, and take your turn at paying the bill....this is important to building a relationship of any kind. NEVER USE OR TAKE ADVANTAGE of a person.
